Center for Belarusian Studies is happy to announce a convocation to be held at Wartburg College, Iowa, on January 16, 2014.
Convocation — David Swartz, the first U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Belarus, will be the featured speaker at the Michaelson, Briner, and Kildahl Literary Symposium today, Jan. 16, 11:30 a.m., in McCaskey Lyceum. His talk, Diplomacy: Values, Assumptions, Sensitivities, will offer observations and revelations from his 29-year career in foreign services with special attention to the role of the humanities in that work. Other featured guests include Stanislau Shushkevich, the first democratically elected president of Belarus and one of three signees for the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and Ivonka Survilla, president of the Belarusian National Republic, the Belarusian government in exile. Swartz, Shushkevich, and Survilla also will participate in a panel discussion on Disengaging East-Central Europe from the East: European Security and North American Interests — The Belarus Model at 4 p.m. in McCaskey Lyceum.
